Because as usual, this was much more fun than what I was actually supposed to be working on. If you’d like a printable version, click here to download a PDF. Now go use your powers for good.

Yard Art Day

By design, step away from the screen2 Comments

Okay friends. I’ve been bombarding you with STEP AWAY FROM THE SCREEN for almost 2 months now — over fifty different designs — and I have yet to show you any of the things that I’ve done when I actually stepped away from the screen. Soooo, wanna see some? Oh good — I hoped you were going to say yes! I’ll start with my favorite so far. But first, some background: A few months ago my friend, and amazing photographer, Deborah Triplett had a dream. “It is my dream that for one day people remember that child within them that likes to play creatively…

Step Away from the Screen and Make Something

By photos, step away from the screen, thoughtsNo Comments

Hi. I’m Laurie and I’m addicted to screens. But I’m not so naïve as to think I can live a life without them. So instead I have set out to change my relationship with screens. To make my time on the screen more mindful and less mindless. To spend less time curating and more time creating. To use screens more responsibly. I’ve done this by setting two goals for myself: I intend to MAKE something every month in 2013. A real thing. That you can touch. Or stand in front of. At least one thing per month. If I make more, then heck…

If you have to tell

(click for bigger) Not that I had anything else to do this afternoon… But when my pal Pam Lewis tweeted that quote today, it hit me right in the AMEN spot. “BAM” I replied. At which point Pam challenged me to turn it into a poster. So I did. Now go do something awesome and let your work speak for itself. It’s the loudest, truest voice out there. Gold star for you!

How To Public Speaking

By announcing, thought provokingOne Comment

Have you all heard of Ignite? An Ignite evening is made up of short talks on interesting subjects. Each speaker has 5 minutes (and 20 slides that auto-advance every 15 seconds) to tell you about something they’re passionate about. Here in Charlotte, we’re getting ready for Ignite Charlotte 5 and I’m honored to be one of the speakers! I’ll be giving you tips on How To Get Pretty Much Anyone To Do Pretty Much Anything. I’m launching the battle early with my ENFP inclinations, and making myself begin working on my talk now in the hopes of finishing strong and avoiding…

Branding the Presidents

By clever, design, history, thought provoking2 Comments

Here’s a cool personal project from designer Meg Jannot — a Tumblr called Branding the Presidents. She’s designing each of the 44 presidents over the course of 44 days. A great exercise for any designer, and especially great for this breathless, rough-and-tumble election year. Nice work Meg! I especially love how different they all are. Here are a few highlights. Click here to see the whole set on Tumblr. Which ones are your favorites? Thanks Ilina!

Old New York

By history, photos, retro vintage ephemera2 Comments

Oh my heavens. Hundreds of gorgeous photos of old New York. Shots you’ve never seen before. Like the one above of painters on the Brooklyn Bridge. With no safety harnesses or anything! I could look at these all day. In fact, I just did. The New York City Municipal Archives has just released a database of over 870,000 photos from its collection of more than 2 million images of New York throughout the 20th century. Here are just a few of the great ones, curated by Alan Taylor from The Atlantic. (Click images to enlarge.) To see more (and there are SO MANY MORE),…

Vote Against!

By save the world4 Comments

If you are in North Carolina and you haven’t voted yet, please PLEASE go vote tomorrow. And please consider voting AGAINST Amendment One — a referendum so offensive to me that I am stunned that we have to even entertain this nonsense. The idea that my home state — the place I was born and where I have spent the majority of my life — believes it acceptable for us to consider adding discrimination to our Constitution is such a disappointment. I feel as if North Carolina has been cast back into the worst part of our past: The part…
