In 1997 I had the thrilling opportunity to work on a CD boxed set of original recordings of historical and contemporary Cuban music. This boxed set predated Buena Vista Social Club by a few years, and Cuba was still off limits for American travel, so the clever folks at Blue Jackel Entertainment worked hard to put this set together, and we felt like it deserved a very special design treatment. The whole package was designed to replicate a cigar box, inside and out. I even created real cigar bands to put on real cigars for the booklet cover photograph. This design earned our team a Grammy Nomination which was pretty thrilling. We didn’t win, but as they say, it really was an honor just to be nominated.
