I was busy last week y’all! Not only have I been Livin’ the Life™, but I’ve had work deadlines galore (hurrah for work!), and also I had my AWESOME GIG OVER AT DESIGN MOM. What a great time I had unearthing nicely designed things from the world at large, as well as showing off some of the stuff I’ve done that makes me happy. Hope you had a chance to drop in on Design Mom, whether to read my words or just to visit one of the truly great blogs out there. And if you haven’t had a chance, I highly recommend carving out some time for it. I promise you won’t walk away (click away?) unsatisfied. Thank you sweet smart Gabrielle for being such a gracious, solicitous host. What an honor that was for me.
Anyhoo, I was working on one of my posts for Design Mom when I crashed headlong into this awesomeness:
The Broken Record, by Twink
“Bits and pieces from hundreds of vintage children’s records mix with modern beats for a deliriously fun time. Bizarre kiddie music mash-ups for adventurous listeners. You’ve never heard kiddie music like this before!” (From the website.)
This is some amazing kids music y’all. Hardly even what you’d have to call kids music, really. The subject matter of the songs is, I guess, kid-oriented, but the content? It’s a musical collage, a pastiche, an ephemera medley. Tinkly toy piano music, fat (phat?) beats, Merrie Melodies-esque dixieland jazz and more, mixed with sound clips and bites from vintage kids songs, rhymes, spoken stuff.
“Picture your stuffed animal collection at a late-night rave in an enchanted forest…Twink is the music they are dancing to.”
–Northeast Performer Magazine
Sounds good, right? So here, how bout you go listen for yourself. Then go buy it.
You can either click on the links, or you can (Mac) control-click or (PC) right-click and “Download Link as…” or “Save Link as…” or whatever your browser says. Either way, do listen.
1. Pussycat
2. Animal Talk
3. Boys and Girls
I played these for Zoe and Lucy today, and before Pussycat was over, they asked me to rewind and start it again. Then they only wanted to listen to that for the rest of the day.
Add to all that, the Twink guy, Mike Langlie, is not only a toy-piano musician, but also a designer/illustrator/collector of cool vintage stuff and I’m betting he designed all the Twink packaging himself. And when I ordered the cd, he emailed me personally to tell me when he’d ship it to me.
I like him.
Suffice to say, I can’t hardly wait to get this cd in the mail.
Happy zyxwvutsrqponMLKjihgfedcba day everyone.
Do I know Brian Huskey? Do I know Brian Huskey! Email me…we’ll dish.
