etch a sketch?

By caught my eye, design2 Comments

I mean, sure the double knob thing was sorta frustrating on the original Etch A Sketch. Diagonals were challenging, and curves were nearly impossible. But that was part of the charm, right? And it was also what separated it from, say, a Magna Doodle (which didn’t exist in my childhood). Or those static-lift drawing pads, which could not have been more annoying. So now they’ve replaced the knobs with a trackball, eh? And they’re calling it Etch A Sketch freestyle? Frankly, I’m not sure what to think. You? (Thanks sub-studio design blog)

logorama

By caught my eye, design, video

Logorama by H5 is an short animated film about a world made entirely of logos and trademarks. The Pringles man drives a truck, the green and red dots in the Stop & Shop logo are actually stop lights, and Microsoft butterflies flutter across the screen. The plot sounds like an LA shoot-em-up (between the Michelin man and Ronald MacDonald), and from a visual standpoint, I can’t wait to see it. Check out the trailer here. Information about the film here. (Thanks Design Observer)

mix tape usb hub

When we moved from Durham to Charlotte a few years ago, we purged our world of hundreds of cassettes that we had either obtained digitally or which we were pretty certain we wouldn’t listen to again. strawberry crab

First of all, is this not the most adorable crab you’ve ever seen? It’s real, but doesn’t it look like a Webkinz? Or a gummy crab! I have a personal affinity for crabs, but even for you who don’t I’ll bet you’ll emit a little “aww.” This sweet thing was recently discovered off the coast of Taiwan. Secondly, it’s amazing to me that we are still discovering new species. I mean, I know about the Rainforest and everything, but still. It’s amazing.

top 10 magazine covers

By caught my eye, design, historyNo Comments

Time.com has curated a list of the top-10 magazine covers of 2009. There are some great ones, but this New Yorker cover by Chris Ware slapped me across the face when it came into my house a couple of months ago. Another New Yorker cover that wasn’t included in the list but that I haven’t been able to send to the recycling bin is this one that came out immediately after President Obama’s inauguration. It is titled “First,” and I think it is perfect. See them all here. (Thanks Guy)

cash for warhol

By caught my eye, funny ha haNo Comments

Walking to work yesterday I saw this sign posted on the corner of Thomas and Central. I wasn’t sure if it was some sort of guerilla street art campaign, or a for-real recession buster ploy, a la your usual Work from Home! We Buy Houses! schemes. So I googled it, and there’s actually a website! I can’t imagine that the sort of person who has an actual Warhol is also looking at utility poles for ideas on how to get some cash for it, but then again, stranger things have most likely happened.
