Red, Red. They call me Red.

By thoughts6 Comments

The other day, I found $200 lying on the street.* Seeing as how our finances have essentially been frozen for the past 12 months or so as we renovated a house, sold a house, bought a house, moved to a new town, launched a new business and, you know, fed our children, I haven’t spent anything resembling mad money (or even mildly irritated money) in a long time. Add to that, as many of you know, I’m a fan of things that look good. And, it goes without saying, for the better part of 5 years now, I have wanted…

My life as a Gashlycrumb

By sites to see, thoughts10 Comments

When I was in college my roommate, the clever Swooze, had a poster of Edward Gorey’s The Gashlycrumb Tinies. What with us being busy college students and all, we devoted what extremely precious, very little free time we had to memorizing the whole thing. A is for Amy who fell down the stairs, B is for Basil, assaulted by bears. And so on, and so forth. You know, just in case the final was going to be cumulative. In our defense, the poster was hanging in the bathroom… Anywho, moving on. Sheryl over at Paper Napkin posted a link to…

You know, for the kids

My pal Shelly, appreciator of all things small, unusual and cute, sent me this link this morning. She suggested it as a companion piece to the message beans I wrote about before and I tell ya — I agree with her. The Plant-Me Pet is a biodegradable latex doll with plant seeds for eyes. You can play with them or bury them head first in soil to sprout into edible pumpkin, melon, or tomato plants. I love their talking bubbles and I love their shapes and their colors and the way their seedy eyes augment their different personalities. The only…

Mama Drama contest

By photos, sites to see12 Comments

So Jenny, one of my new pals over at Mama Drama, is one weird chiquita. She has a house full of stuff — collections, trippy paintings and cool machinery. I’d love to visit her! And if you ever thought you grew up in a hole-in-the-wall town, just ask her where she’s from. Anyway, she’s having a contest where she’s giving away this crazy poodle portrait in exchange for us showing her some weird stuff in our houses. I don’t know if any of us is going to have anything weirder than the stuff she has, but I’m gonna give it…

Founding Father affinities

LUCY: “Mama. You remember that book we read? With the boat?” ME: “The Magic Treehouse book? About the Vikings?” LUCY: “No not the Vikings. The one with the people in the boat. They rowed. In a river. With the man who told them what to do. With the war.” ME: “Ohhhh. Revolutionary War on Wednesday.” LUCY (holding up a nickel): “Yes! Look Mama. This looks like that man. George Washington.”

Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans, spam, spam, spam and spam

By spam spam bacon and spam, thoughts6 Comments

Unlike the disturbing spam I received a few weeks ago, I just got the BEST SPAM EVER. Not only is it from the best spam name ever. Not only does it use air quotes (“get it?”). Not only is it written partially in Olde English. But it is also schizophrenic! What more could you ask for in a spam message? Lookee: Buster McThunderstick? Stop bugging me? What is this, reverse psychology spam? (“Please UpsideUp! Please don’t throw me in the spam folder! Anywhere but the spam folder!” ) But don’t worry, don’t worry. I won’t click on it. You see,…

My dad just forwarded this to me and I felt it my duty to pass it on to you. I swear y’all. I love this man. Totally in spite of my better judgment. But I love him (MM, not my dad. Of course I love my dad). Tuesday, November 14th, 2006 A Liberal’s Pledge to Disheartened Conservatives … by Michael Moore To My Conservative Brothers and Sisters, I know you are dismayed and disheartened at the results of last week’s election. You’re worried that the country is heading toward a very bad place you don’t want it to go. Your…

This? Is my friend.

By sites to see, thoughts5 Comments

She WON a marathon yesterday. Here’s the story. I can’t decide if her running in and winning the marathon counterbalances my having sat around all weekend consuming and ass-enlargening, or if it just exposes in harsh harsh light the ass-enlargening hunk of laziness I’ve become. Either way, I’m proud to bits of my friend, whom we affectionately call Xofod. And now I’m taking my exposed enlarged ass outside to move around a little.

11-11: The Blogiversary

By thoughts

When I was a kid I used to pretend my eyes were a camera. I’d stand in place, turning 360º, blinking snapshots: the next-door neighbor’s trampoline; the split-rail fence along the side of our yard; my 5th grade teacher opening a birthday present; the arcade at Putt-Putt. I thought that by concentrating on the thing I was blinking the picture of, it would stay in my memory forever. Not unlike the lyrics to Mr. Roboto, but perhaps a little more deliberate. I also tried keeping journals. I’d get a new notebook and start, in earnest, recording the mundaneities of my…
