Things that make me happy, pt.2

By sites to see, thoughts2 Comments

Harold’s Planet is a sweet little comic I stumbled upon a while ago. They sent out weekly cartoons and have a trove of cute animations and whatnots at their site. At times it verges a little on “too cute,” but for the most part they have a great sense of absurd + cute and have hit some real winners. Here’s my all-time favorite: Visit their blog to see the archives, which is where some of the aces are.

Ugh Valentine’s Day. Ugh Presidents Day.

Trying to write anything creative right now is proving terribly terribly impossible due to a little run of crappy we’ve had here. I’ve got 3 or 4 posts started, but none finished, and all outdated, despite their all containing information I wanted to tell you. So what do I do? Mashup? Forget it all and move on? Just keep writing and pretend everything is still current? Yes. A list! Of all the crappy! So I can get it out and move on! You’re brilliant! (Warning: It’s a long one. And it contains nothing truly tragic or even deserving of much…

Right Candidates, Wrong Question

You won’t often find me talking politics here at the Upside Up. It’s not that I don’t have anything to say, it’s just that before you and I finish our conversation, I will generally get frustrated to the point of throwing my hands in the air with a futile sigh loud enough to wake Abe Lincoln. You know how in college, when you were taking a tough class, sometimes you didn’t study for an exam as well as you knew you should? This way, when you didn’t get a good grade, you could say, “Well, I didn’t study as hard…

Hypothetical hyperbole

By thoughts5 Comments

I was just trying to leave a comment on a blogger blog and the above claptrap is what I got as my supersecret word verification cryptogram. WTF blogger? Do you resent us? Is this a competitive thing? You’re all, “Okay people. Fine. You may think you’re smarter than the spam generators, but let’s see you read this. Heh heh.” And we’re all, “Jeezeree Blogger! Lighten up.” And you’re all, “Don’t tell me to lighten up. You lighten up.” And we’re all, “Whatevs. I’m done anyway.” And you’re all, “No. Wait. Come back. You got 37 more profile views! Your blog…

Some things…

In no particular order: – We went out last weekend to a friend’s 40th birthday party and, although I’m still a few years away from that big celebration myself, I have to admit to being skeptical that the words “fortieth birthday” will ever apply to me. – I woke up terribly hungover the next day, but I swear I don’t think I had the kind of fun the night before that warranted it. How much of a bummer is that? The hangover without the fun. Is that part of getting closer to 40? If so — lord I do not…

Red, Red. They call me Red.

The other day, I found $200 lying on the street.* Seeing as how our finances have essentially been frozen for the past 12 months or so as we renovated a house, sold a house, bought a house, moved to a new town, launched a new business and, you know, fed our children, I haven’t spent anything resembling mad money (or even mildly irritated money) in a long time. Add to that, as many of you know, I’m a fan of things that look good. And, it goes without saying, for the better part of 5 years now, I have wanted…

My life as a Gashlycrumb

By sites to see, thoughts10 Comments

When I was in college my roommate, the clever Swooze, had a poster of Edward Gorey’s The Gashlycrumb Tinies. What with us being busy college students and all, we devoted what extremely precious, very little free time we had to memorizing the whole thing. A is for Amy who fell down the stairs, B is for Basil, assaulted by bears. And so on, and so forth. You know, just in case the final was going to be cumulative. In our defense, the poster was hanging in the bathroom… Anywho, moving on. Sheryl over at Paper Napkin posted a link to…

Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans, spam, spam, spam and spam

Unlike the disturbing spam I received a few weeks ago, I just got the BEST SPAM EVER. Not only is it from the best spam name ever. Not only does it use air quotes (“get it?”). Not only is it written partially in Olde English. But it is also schizophrenic! What more could you ask for in a spam message? Lookee: Buster McThunderstick? Stop bugging me? What is this, reverse psychology spam? (“Please UpsideUp! Please don’t throw me in the spam folder! Anywhere but the spam folder!” ) But don’t worry, don’t worry. I won’t click on it. You see,…

My dad just forwarded this to me and I felt it my duty to pass it on to you. I swear y’all. I love this man. Totally in spite of my better judgment. But I love him (MM, not my dad. Of course I love my dad). Tuesday, November 14th, 2006 A Liberal’s Pledge to Disheartened Conservatives … by Michael Moore To My Conservative Brothers and Sisters, I know you are dismayed and disheartened at the results of last week’s election. You’re worried that the country is heading toward a very bad place you don’t want it to go. Your…
