Bleecker Street

By thoughtsNo Comments

The summer after my sophomore year in college, I went up to NY to spend some time on Long Island with my friend Swooze (yes the same Swooze you read about here). One day we went into the city to stay with her sister who lived in the West Village (was it on 12th St?). That trip I experienced my first (but definitely not my last) unfathomably small Manhattan apt. In my memory, all I can see is a kitchen, and I don’t remember where we slept, but I know we didn’t spend much time there. The next morning, since…

Some things, with a happy ending

Why don’t they make frozen orange juice with pulp? They can make fresh oj that tastes like chalk for cripe’s sake, but they can’t freeze any that has actual fruit in it? When I type words that end in “tion” like education or information, I usually type “tino” instead, like educatino or informatino. So Italian! This is amazingly fascinating and beautiful. This guy Noah took a picture of himself every day for 6 years, then made a video out of all the pictures. I couldn’t take my eyes off it. Have you seen the Citibank identity theft commercical with Thelma…

The Seven Year Scratch

By love thursday, thoughts5 Comments

7 years ago yesterday, Bob and I got married. Tonight we cleaned ourselves up, left the girls with my parents and skipped out on all our responsibilities to go to dinner and a movie. While we were at dinner, we decided to talk about things that have happened in each of the past 7 years. Like, something big or momentous or otherwise memorable from each year. It’s amazing how much unimportant crap you can remember without even trying. Like, what date we closed on our house in Durham (January 14, 2000). Or where we were when I took my very…

Alive and Kicking it

So. Hi everyone. Um, how’s it going? Some weather we’ve been having, eh? Heh heh.Yeah. Well, uh, as you may have noticed, I’ve been a little off the radar while we’re trying to put our life back together in the aftermath of our house sale, house purchase and move to a new town that all took place in a 4 week period. I know there are crazier lives than mine. I know I’m a notoriously stressed-out mover. And I know that I have a tendency to whine about things that feel to me as though they might cause my head…

Dutch just posted a humongous list of YouTube videos he lets Juniper watch. Needless to say, it’s an amazing list filled with interesting creative stuff. One of the videos is an old Electric Company piece where kids sing along to New York City signage, pinpointing specific words to create a perfectly surrealist (if not actually surreal) song. I can’t figure out how to embed a YouTube video in my blog, so you’ll just have to click on the link. Update: I figured out how to embed. Here’s the video: Months ago, when it was first released, I bought the boxed…

To be filed under: Things You Didn’t Know about Your Husband

Apparently when you try to sell your house, you’re supposed to make your prospective buyers think you don’t own any clothes, books or dishes — this way they look at your closets, bookshelves and cabinets and instead of seeing your stuff, they imagine their own. It’s like you want to make them think they’re looking at Real Simple magazine or the Hold Everything catalog which makes them think, “Man, I am so not this organized. If I lived in this house, I could be this organized too!” Although actually, this could backfire and you could make them feel guilty about…

Conflict of interest

So I took Lucy to see the pediatric dentist last Monday. Turns out when she dove into the treadmill the previous week she pushed back both her top front teeth, but one is worse than the other, and is a little loose. Luckily Lucy can still bite correctly. If her teeth had moved 1 mm farther, she wouldn’t be able to close her teeth together and the dentist would have to “do something about it.” An x-ray revealed nothing broken and no apparent damage. So we just have to wait about 6 weeks and the tooth should firm up and…
