1507 Miles

By monkeys, photos, thoughts6 Comments

At the beginning of June we took our annual trip driving up and down the East coast to Salisbury, Ct. Unlike all our previous trips it was summer. Bob’s parents live on a lake, and with this trip we were able to spend pretty much all of our time there. And like last year’s trip, I would call it a lovely success. Just lovely. Here are some pictures: Zoe and Lucy walking down to the lake, armed with wetsuits and bread for the fish. Lucy’s got a stick. Mount Everett, Mass. in the background. The place Bob grew up is…

Shower the people you love with advice

By monkeys, thoughts5 Comments

The coolest baby shower I’ve ever been invited to is happening right this very minute and you’re invited too. It’s for Liz and Tammie and Christina, and there are games and prizes and cute pictures of babies, so go have fun. I hear citymama is even bringing booze, so you can get your champagne on too. Happy happy. My long-winded advice is rooted in the logistics of handling two kids where previously there was only one (or, in my case, none). When Zoe and Lucy were born, my parents moved in with us. It was incredible and loving and helpful…

Par la Grâce du poisson

Can’t stop thinking about this. Must tell you about it. Tuesday morning, Zoe and Lucy were really, really, really slow getting ready and we were really, really, really late leaving for school. I’m not terribly horribly concerned with being late for school, but Tuesday, all the not listening to me, and all the not getting ready, and all the doing other things instead of getting ready, well, it got to me. Usually I am a deep well of patience with Lucy and Zoe. Tuesday I wasn’t. So we left the house and I was not in the best mood. And…

My birthday presents

By thoughts6 Comments

1. A trip with Zoe, Lucy and Bob to the sublime Lake Rabun, home to the amazing waterfall you see above (but which you absolutely can’t grasp the staggering loveliness of from this picture — sorry), and vacation home of my awesome cousin Jeff and his awesome wife Sherry. 2. A new desk (along with a new lamp), built by hand by my sweet, clever, creative, hard-working husband, who may or may not look like this: Lucky little me. And thanks mom and dad for a super life!

The real deal

By thoughts8 Comments

Up til now, Zoe and Lucy’s life has been relatively scare-free. Although they say they’re afraid of nightmares, they haven’t really seemed to actually have any. They didn’t like Finding Nemo from the first moments, and by the time the sharks came on, they asked me, at age 2 1/2, to please turn it off. And on Halloween last year, Lucy wasn’t thrilled when a hidden smoke machine surprised her with an emphatic (read: loud) cloud of smoke from point-blank range. But mostly, their life has been free of actual scary stuff. Until yesterday. We were driving home from a…

I’m ok, you’re ok

So, remember all that uncertainty and doubt I told you about here? I guess I’m still kinda in the throes of it all. But apparently, at least according to my horoscopes for this month, things are looking up. Before you read, it’s relevant to know that, while I consider myself a Taurus, I’m also very much an Aries. You see, I’m on the cusp of the two signs. I started being born more-or-less in Aries, but 36 hours later (my poor sweet mom) I was born in Taurus. Thus the high-energy, strong-willed patience. And the strong will, did I mention…

Things that make me happy – spring!

By photos, thoughts12 Comments

Little ceramic milk bottle that tells it like it is, filled with light-colored flowers, flanked by vintage salt + pepper shakers (boxing pineapple and banana head), with tiny stained glass flower charms suctioned to window. Right over my kitchen sink. Makes doing the dishes a whole lot lovelier. There is no sign of spring quite as expressive as a wall or ceiling of wisteria. Shocking purple, with heavy looking bunches that sprinkle light feathery petals like soap flakes, and a candy smell that stops you dead in your tracks. When I lived in Durham, my friend Jennifer and I had…

M.I.A.

By moving, thoughts5 Comments

Gah. Life! For anyone still here, kickin around these empty halls, hello! I’ve missed you, even though I’ve been too tangled in the weeds outside my comfort zone to let you know. But I’m here now. And I’ve got some stories for you. Some of which I’ll tell you right now. Once upon a time, I worked in an office. I worked in two offices, actually. One at a time. A long time ago. That was when we lived in New York and I worked for other, lovely, people, surrounded by other lovely people, and I had a lot of…

World’s Shortest Fairy Tale

By thoughts

Once upon a time a guy asked a girl, “Will you marry me?” The girl said “No” and she lived happily ever after and went shopping, drank martinis with friends, always had a clean house, never had to cook, had a closet full of shoes and handbags, stayed skinny, and was never farted on. The End + + + Fairy tale sent to me by my sister-in-law Sheila. Photo by Yarik Mission from stock.xchng.

Things that make me happy, pt 4

Figuring out one of the reasons that February was such a sucky month. I present as evidence, our cell phone usage for the past few months: Month Total Min. Feb 07 666 Jan 07 602 Dec 06 573 Nov 06 651 I do not make this up. This is more heavy-handed than fiction could ever be. Welcome March!
