When we were weighing the pros and cons of moving away from Durham, one of the things that was on our cons list that we had no answer for was the Eno River. It essentially runs through the middle of town, it’s vast, it’s got a great variety of trails and destinations (swinging bridges, old defunct pump stations, actual mountains, log cabins, etc) and, as is obvious from this photo, it’s gorgeous. And there aren’t too many mountain lions. This particular day was a treasure. It was September, yet still warm enough for the girls to strip to their underwear…
We’re back! And you’ve all been so patient — thank you for putting up with my absence of the past 2 weeks. We have returned from our 6 day, 1500 mile, 10 state, 9 city, whirlwind, east coast extravaganza and I’m now settled back in enough to tell you about it. Many of you may recall our last trip north, a nightmare of herculean proportions that spawned a tidal wave of two-year-old-ness in Zoe and Lucy that didn’t stop until they were knee-deep in their threes. It featured snow-boundedness in a non-childproof house, white-out 5 mph driving on the Jersey…
Chookoloonks and Momster have started a tradition called Love Thursday in which I’ve decided to participate when I can remember to do so. A couple of weeks ago, I included my post about Bob’s and my anniversary (here). Today, I’m pleased to present to you Zoe and Lucy in love. With each other. Best friends doesn’t even begin to scratch the outer coating of the surface. Consider for a moment this fact: for over 4 years they have spent almost every hour, minute and second together. Then consider this: In the <airquote> rules </airquote> of parenting, they tell you to…
Why don’t they make frozen orange juice with pulp? They can make fresh oj that tastes like chalk for cripe’s sake, but they can’t freeze any that has actual fruit in it? When I type words that end in “tion” like education or information, I usually type “tino” instead, like educatino or informatino. So Italian! This is amazingly fascinating and beautiful. This guy Noah took a picture of himself every day for 6 years, then made a video out of all the pictures. I couldn’t take my eyes off it. Have you seen the Citibank identity theft commercical with Thelma…
So, Zoe and Lucy started back to school on Friday. It was a half day, or, since they normally only go for a half day I guess this was a quarter day. And parents went with their kids. So there we all were, in a room made for 11 kids and 2 teachers (that’s 11 people who are about 3 ft tall and 2 full-sized humans). All 11 kids and at least 1 parent per kid, plus the teachers. That’s at least 24 people. And it seemed like they were expecting the kids to have a normal sort of morning,…
So, as you can see from the very end of that little video, Zoe and Lucy were freakin thrilled at the Wiggles show last Friday. I swear, I don’t think Zoe stopped dancing the entire show. And the show? It was amazing. Way more better than I would ever have imagined, even after watching countless hours of Wiggles back when the girls were 2. In fact, that made the show even better for me. You see, I’ve got this thing. Whenever I see someone perform live, especially when they’re somone I know very well in their recorded persona (be it…
Ok, here’s the thing. Back before I had kids. Back before I was thinking about having kids. Even back when I had little babies who had yet to watch any tv other than the headsmackingly simple “I should’a thought of that” Baby Einstein videos, I would have given you such a hairy eyeball, such a sneer, such a scornful dishing of my witty sarcasm if you had told me that I was, someday, going to take my kids to see a live Wiggles show. And yet, that’s where I’m going right now. My mom and I are taking Zoe and…
Hey! Zoe and Lucy turned four yesterday! Four! That’s years people. Four years old. Like, the length of a seemingly endless presidential term. Or the presumed duration of college. One day they’re babies. Like this: The next day, they’re old. Like this: Zoe and Lucy, thank you for making these past four years more fun than any presidential term and more sleepless than college. I love who you are growing up to be: voracious in your quest to understand the world, astounding in your ability to surprise me anew every day. You are funny, loving, unique and totally, completely insane….
I’m sure you’re bored by now with my incessant droning on about Zoe and Lucy and their lack of interest in art (like here and then here). So I wanted to offer this update as a straighten your back and puff out your chest expression of my sheepish pride. They have suddenly started drawing people, and they are creating these masterpieces of families, not just one person per sheet of paper. That’s Lucy’s above. It’s our family, all floating around Papa. She’s also been drawing Gay-Gay and Pop, Baby Tess, Papa when he was a little boy, Humpty Dumpty, and…
At 12:45 today, I had just finished making lunch for Zoe and Lucy when we got a call from the scheduling service that someone wanted to see our house, today, from 2:00-3:00. I was conflicted about this since (a) we’re already under contract and anything else at this point is insurance, or, gravy, and (b) Zoe seemed tired at the park this morning and I really wanted the girls to be able to take a nap today if they wanted to. Anyway, I told the people they could come from 2:30-3:30 instead, and figured we’d just put the girls to…
